Alfama District – your food tour destination

The Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest and most characteristic district.

It is a charming maze of narrow, cobbled streets and traditional houses that wind up a steep hill from the banks of the Rio Tejo to the São Jorge Castle

The Alfama district is home to some of Lisbon’s most iconic historical buildings, including Sé Cathedral, Castelo de São Jorge, Panteão Nacional and the Igreja de Santo António.

Historically, the Alfama was located outside the walls of the Castelo São Jorge and was home to many of the city’s poorest residents. As Lisbon developed into a major maritime city, the district retained its sad status as a dangerous and deprived area, home to sailors and dockers. Today, Alfama has shed this sad reputation to become a fashionable and artisanal neighbourhood, while retaining its unique character and rich heritage.

Alfama is a pleasure to explore, and the best way to do so is to get lost in its tangle of alleys and side streets. Around every corner is a charming square, a trendy café or a quirky shop, and the steep climbs are rewarded with stunning panoramic views.
